Commodity Exchange Building (Exchange Silk): Contracts hall

The contract room (sala de contratación), also called the hall of columns due to the 24 twisted pillars supporting the vaults of this impressive room, was the first bank institution of municipal nature, and founded in 1407. It aimed to provide exchange currency and deposits of jewelry, valuable objects and monetary funds of individuals and institutions. In 1371, the first bill of exchange of Spain was issued there.
